My name is Tors Pearcy, I’m an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) who lives in Carmarthen.
When I gave birth I wanted to breastfeed. I struggled. A lot. Bleeding nipples and shields later I was told about this amazing midwife who outside of work helped others to breastfeed in her own time.
I was able to get the support to enable me to continue my feeding journey in the way I wanted and before long I had a strong desire to pay forward all the support I had had. So, in 2014, my journey into breastfeeding support began.
I volunteered on the local maternity ward and then studied further to become a qualified peer supporter with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers in 2017, and in 2018 completed my breastfeeding counsellor training with them and volunteering on the National Breastfeeding Helpline UK. I was thankful to be able to join and support the local Breastfeeding Group called Llaeth Mam Breastfeeding Groups and began to co-run a group in Carmarthen and took the lead in increasing the online support we offered via our closed Facebook group, we were steadily increasing the support we could offer and my passion and drive to learn more and more to help support more complex situations grew.
Then COVID happened. Then. COVID. Happened.
Overnight our groups closed and our online Facebook group exploded, and as a result it made me realise how much skilled specialist support was needed both nationally and locally and so I decided I would study, very hard, to get the highest qualification in clinical lactation that is recognised worldwide.... an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant.
In order to take the four hour exam I had to complete 14 health science courses, complete 95 hours of lactation specific education AND be able to show I had provided at least 1000 hours of clinical support in the five years prior to applying for the exam.
In early 2021 I took the exam and found out in July 2021 that I had passed with a score of more than 90%. It was one of the proudest achievements of my life.
Since qualifying I have continued to volunteer with Llaeth Mam Breastfeeding Groups and remain a breastfeeding counsellor with the Association of Breastfeeding Mothers but also now provide that one to one specialist support as a private lactation consultant.
Each birth and baby opens the way to a new feeding journey. Each journey is unique to that family. I walk alongside your journey in whatever way you need me to in order to achieve your own personal feeding goals, be that one colostrum feed to years of feeding and anything in-between.
I am passionate about being able to give tailored support using evidence based information whilst remaining family centred. You lead the way. You are your baby's expert.
